The Tour de Suisse in
Emmetten-stockhütte
In Emmetten, it’s uniquely “scheen”
As an active and versatile community at the top of the canton of Nidwalden, the municipality of Emmetten has a lot to offer. Emmetten stands for its sense of community and its living environment, creating incomparable moments in this beautiful natural paradise.
(Health) tourism came to Emmetten in 1863 with the construction of the Schöneck water healing institute. Among other things, respiratory diseases were treated at the institute. They relied on the healing power of the spring water and the fresh Alpine air. With the outbreak of World War I, the decline of the spa facility also began. In 1877, the “Landsgemeinde” (traditional local assembly) decided to build the road from Beckenried to Emmetten. The first cable car ran from Emmetten to Niederbauen in 1913. In 1968, the Emmetten-Stockhütte gondola was built.
Emmetten is located at 774 meters above sea level and has just over 1,600 inhabitants. With five cable cars, 70 km of hiking trails, 35 km of ski slopes, and 9 hotels and restaurants, tourism plays a major role in Emmetten.
In summer, numerous hikes and bike routes attract many visitors. One of the most famous hikes is the unique wildlife observation trail, which leads from Niederbauen to Stockhütte. Additionally, the mountain inn Niederbauen offers culinary delights, with the popular Candle Light Dinner taking place almost every Saturday. On Stockhütte, the newly renovated playground delights families with children. With a treetop trail, balance path, barefoot trail, and many other play elements as well as barbecue areas, the playground offers plenty of variety. For those seeking more excitement, the route from Stockhütte back to the valley can be completed on a bikeboard.
In winter, those seeking tranquility will find numerous snowshoe trails on Niederbauen. On Stockhütte, which is part of the Klewenalp-Stockhütte ski area, there are ski slopes and sledding runs. A conveyor belt is available for beginner skiers. In the valley, there are beautiful winter hiking trails.
One thing summer and winter in Emmetten have in common – you are always accompanied by a stunning panorama of the surrounding mountains and the turquoise-blue Lake Lucerne. By the way, “scheen” in the Nidwalden dialect means beautiful.
