The most beautiful village by the most beautiful lake
The poet Isabelle Kaiser (1866-1925) described Beckenried in her works as “the most beautiful village by the most beautiful lake.” The people of Beckenried still call it this today: “S’scheeschtä Dorf am scheenschtä See,” translated as: “The most beautiful village by the most beautiful lake.”
Beckenried, uniquely located on Lake Lucerne with the nearby recreational area Klewenalp-Stockhütte just outside the door, is situated at 435 meters above sea level and has just over 3,700 inhabitants. Beckenried was the first place in the canton of Nidwalden to develop tourism, which began before 1850. The construction of the Klewenalp cable car came about in 1933 through private initiative. The poor accessibility of the mountain properties and alpine farms at that time was the starting point of the cable car idea. The initiators also had the tourism potential in mind. Excursion traffic and winter sports developed beyond expectations, and at regular intervals, the cable car facilities were expanded. The first cable car (1933) had 12 seats per cabin (which could not be fully occupied due to licensing reasons), the second (1936) had 20, the third (1955) already 40, and the fourth, which came into operation in 1972, could hold 80 people per cabin. In 1999, the Klewenalp cable car merged with the Emmetten-Stockhütte aerial cable car, forming today’s Bergbahnen Beckenried-Emmetten AG.
In summer, Beckenried is the starting point for unforgettable activities. Whether it’s a boat trip on Lake Lucerne, a hike to the impressive Risleten Gorge and the dinosaur tracks left by the Iguanodontid dinosaurs that once lived in Beckenried, or a ride on the aerial cable car to Klewenalp, where varied hiking trails, bike routes, climbing gardens, mountain huts, barbecue spots, and playgrounds await – there’s much to discover in Beckenried.
Winter in Beckenried is mostly centered around the snow sports area of Klewenalp-Stockhütte. Many slopes are waiting to be explored by winter sports enthusiasts of all ages. Numerous winter hikes, snowshoe trails, and sledding runs also offer plenty of variety.
One thing summer and winter in Beckenried have in common – you are always accompanied by a stunning panorama of the surrounding mountains and the turquoise-blue Lake Lucerne.

Helpers Wanted: Become Part of the Adventure
To ensure that the Tour de Suisse runs smoothly and becomes an unforgettable experience for participants, spectators, and the region, the organizing committee relies on the support of numerous volunteers. These volunteers are the backbone of the event and play a crucial role in making sure everything goes according to plan – from securing the route to catering for the guests.
Those who get involved and lend a hand become part of one of Switzerland’s largest and most traditional sporting events, experiencing the Tour from a unique perspective – up close and right in the middle of the action. It’s the perfect opportunity to have exciting encounters, make new contacts, and experience the unique spirit of the Tour de Suisse firsthand.
We need volunteers at various locations: along the race route, where the safety of the riders and spectators is the top priority, as well as at the numerous food and beverage stands ensuring the well-being of the visitors. Whether it’s helping with setup and teardown, assisting in spectator areas, or managing traffic, every helping hand is welcome and important.
Clubs, groups, or individuals who would like to be part of this unique community experience are warmly invited to get in touch with us. For many volunteers, the event is not only an opportunity to be part of a high-profile sporting event but also to do something meaningful for the region and to jointly set a positive example of community spirit.
We look forward to welcoming everyone who is willing to contribute their time and energy to help us create an unforgettable event together. As a thank-you, exciting experiences, new friendships, a volunteer meal after the event – and, of course, the good feeling of having contributed to the success of the Tour de Suisse – await you.
First Information for Residents and the Local Population
The organizing committee for the Tour de Suisse stages in the canton of Nidwalden invited residents and the local community to an information event about the upcoming event. Around 70 interested individuals attended and gained insights into the event, which will place the canton of Nidwalden in the international spotlight with key locations in Beckenried and Emmetten.
Hans Gallati, the chairman of the organizing committee, was pleased with the positive response and the great support shown for the event. “This is not something to be taken for granted,” he emphasized, noting that, alongside the expected impressive images, the event will also bring some inconveniences for the residents. One major challenge will be the limited availability of parking spaces.
During the event, the enthusiasm of the participants was palpable. Many of them are avid cyclists or regularly use their bikes and consider it a privilege that Switzerland’s most prominent sporting event will pass right by their homes. This event brings people together and strengthens the sense of community.
If the weather cooperates — and the Tour de Suisse organizers are optimistic about this — nothing will stand in the way of a great public celebration.
The Organizing Committee for Nidwalden
The 11-member organizing committee for the final stage of the Tour de Suisse 2025 has been established. Its mission is to ensure the smooth execution of the event on-site. In the picture, from left to right: Heinz Rutishauser (Vice-President), Gerold Käslin (Infrastructure and Animation), Ronnie Hürlimann (PR/Media), Caroline Denier (Secretariat), Arlette Zimmermann (Marketing/Sponsorship), Hans Gallati (President), Kean Mathis (Safety), Maya Stalder (Gastronomy), Manuel Mathis (Infrastructure), Toni Mathis (Animation). The Tour de Suisse Comes to Nidwalden
Nidwalden, in the heart of central Switzerland, will once again play a central role in this major cycling event in 2025. The 7th stage to Emmetten and the mountain time trial to the Stockhütte promise an exciting finale for the 2025 Tour de Suisse.
The idea of integrating a mountain time trial from Beckenried to the Stockhütte came from Heinz Rutishauser, CEO of Beckenried-Emmetten AG cable cars. A passionate road and mountain biker himself, Rutishauser quickly convinced the organizers of the Tour de Suisse of the plan’s feasibility.
Now, this plan is becoming a reality. The 2025 Tour de Suisse will start on June 15 in Küssnacht and end with the 7th stage in Emmetten. The mountain time trial from Beckenried to the Stockhütte will be the highlight of the following day. A large public festival is planned for the weekend of June 21-22, 2025, around Beckenried and Emmetten, attracting not only cycling enthusiasts but also visitors from across the region.
With this attractive route, the Tour de Suisse returns to Nidwalden after 12 years. The last time, Buochs served as the host, acting as both the starting and finishing point of a stage.
The newly formed organizing committee for the Beckenried-Emmetten stages has already begun its work. Led by Heinz Rutishauser, the committee includes well-known local figures, such as the mayor of Emmetten, Anton Mathis, and three members who were already part of the successful 2013 event in Buochs. Their extensive experience will now benefit the upcoming Tour de Suisse in Nidwalden.
