Vaduz
Vaduz has an eventful history behind it and has changed considerably over the centuries. Today, the municipality is an important financial center and the capital of the Principality of Liechtenstein.
The first documented mention of Vaduz dates back to 1150. Vaduz Castle was built around 1300 and has been the permanent residence of the Princes of Liechtenstein since 1939.
The Principality of Liechtenstein is a small state in the Alpine region between Switzerland and Austria and covers an area of 160 square kilometers. Vaduz lies on the eastern bank of the Rhine, at the foot of the Dreischwestern massif. The former farming village, which was known for its excellent wine, has become a bustling residential town with banks, a large number of museums, commercial buildings and service businesses.
The town is surrounded by numerous recreational areas with cycle paths along the Rhine, mountain bike trails in the surrounding mountains as well as hiking trails, family parks and renaturalized streams and ponds.
If you want to get to know the Principality in all its facets, you should take the Liechtenstein Trail by e-bike or gravel bike: It leads from south to north through the entire country. The 85-kilometre route is best divided into 2 to 3 stages. Take a journey through time on the Five Castles Tour, which takes cycling fans to five impressive castles and palaces in Liechtenstein and Switzerland. Cycling through three countries in less than 60 kilometers? Liechtenstein’s compact size makes this possible, as the three-country tour takes you from Liechtenstein to Switzerland and Austria.
On the Rhine Valley Tour, you cycle along the Rhine and climb quite a few meters in altitude – including magnificent views. The tour up to the Pfälzerhütte is mountainous and offers outdoor enthusiasts a fantastic panorama and a romantic hut atmosphere. The Valorsch tour takes you to a remote and picturesque region around the summit of the 2,104-metre-high Schönberg. Pedal hard on the Gafadura tour, which leads from Schaan up to the rustic Gafadura hut. The Eschnerberg tour is a more leisurely ride: along the 25-kilometre route, leisure cyclists cycle through forests and small villages all the way to Austria.
