PIURO
Situated right alongside the Valchiavenna bike path, Piuro is noted for its artistic and cultural pursuits, archaeological excavations, pietra Ollare (potstone), breathtaking alpine landscapes, streams and waterfalls, among which the famous Acquafraggia waterfalls stand out, a natural monument much loved by hikers and tourists. Piuro boasts a rich and fascinating history, marked by a tragic event: the landslide of 1618 that destroyed the ancient village. Today, the locality delivers a mix of history, nature and culture, perfect for anyone looking for a tranquil and seductive destination.
SPLUGA PASS
Located at an altitude of 2,117 m, it is one of the most important passes in the Alps, recognised since ancient times for its undemanding transit. Today, the Spluga Pass is one of the classic climbs of Valchiavenna for road cycling. The most evocative stretch is between Campodolcino and Pianazzo, where you take on the characteristic hairpin bends designed more than 200 years ago by Engineer Donegani, a true gem. In Montespluga, the lake sparkles and reflects the surrounding mountains: a well-earned breather, before the final sprint to the summit.
VALCHIAVENNA BICYCLE PATH
At the very heart of the Alps, between majestic peaks and gentle slopes, this beautiful 40 km itinerary winds from Lake Como to Switzerland. Following the crystalline waters of the river Mera, you immerse yourself in the Pian di Spagna Reserve, an oasis of serenity and natural beauty. Crossing the ancient, narrow streets of historic Chiavenna, you might pause in villages that still bear the indelible signs of the past. Stone houses and frescoed facades tell of trade and meetings, battles and alliances.
